You Don't Have To Be Rich To Buy Great Toys

Toys for all ages and all budgets

Toys during Christmas are as decorative as the lights and the candy canes. And choosing toys that will fit into your budget as well as your child's heart can seem rather daunting at first.

Playing Santa at the holidays

When our children were younger, my wife and I could buy toys right in front of them, asking them as they went to a toy store with us.

I still recommend that if you know that your children have short memories.

As the kids get older and this no longer is possible, then you can pull out catalogs of toys and look through them with your child or children. This will give you an idea of what they might like.

Or even just the category that you should be buying toys in.

Some boys like toys that are loud and can be beaten up over and over. Knowing this, you can try to find similar toys to the ones that he may have chosen, but at discount stores so that you won't feel bad finding it in pieces in February.

As they grow

It seems that toys get more expensive the older the kids get, so in order to compromise on this, my wife and I made a deal with the kids.

They could make a list of the toys they wanted, but they could only pick two high-priced items. This means if they wanted a stereo and a video game system, then they would only receive one.

This taught them that Christmas wasn't about getting all the toys that they wanted -- Christmas was about family.

At the same time, we were able to see what they might like for their birthday.

This gave us time to save up for toys that were more expensive, without causing financial debt at the holidays.

Having a list of toys that the kids want will help you to stay on track.

Toys as Christmas gifts are the sugarplums that dance above your child's head during the holidays and cause mysterious bouts of good behavior. Taking the time to listen to them and see what toys they really want will make everyone happy in the end.
