The Joys of Christmas Humor
If your Yuletide season seems a bit too dour, there's plenty of Christmas humor you can take advantage of to liven it up.
From the Grinch to "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer," Christmas humor is firmly entrenched in our culture. Ironically, there are those who take a bah, humbug attitude to the whole idea, insisting that Christmas is a serious holiday intended for celebration of the Messiah, not for something as frivolous as fun.
People like that have a point... on top of their heads. C'mon now -- celebrations are about having fun, aren't they? And I can't imagine that the Reason for the Season would mind us enjoying the lives that have been given us, can you?
Santa Claus, Laughing His Head Off
That headline, by the way, is the punchline of my favorite Christmas joke: What goes "Ho, ho, ho, plop!" Get it? Oh sure, it's a little crude, but it's funny... and it's not nearly as crude as the Spanish tradition of the Caganer, which I happen to think is an example of Christmas frivolity that got a bit out of hand.
And with that in mind, let's not even talk about the Spanish pooping log, okay?
Anyhow, the point is that you can find funny Christmas humor anywhere, whether in jokes, figurines like the Caganer, clever little Christmas songs, and animated Christmas specials. Who can forget the Island of Misfit Toys?
And Then There's the Cards
Christmas card humor runs the gamut from good clean fun to more ribald turns, such as the Christmas card yours truly once received (and still has) which shows Santa shooting the world the bird. And like most things humor related, funny Christmas cards are popping up in email, too.
Consider the Elf Bowling phenomenon. I can't count the number of times back in the early 2000s when I received email cards linking to this sweet little game, in which Santa uses a bowling ball to knock down elves arranged as bowling pins. After all, what else is he going to do for the other 11 months of the year... ?
Christmas Cheer
In my (not so humble) opinion, Christmas should always be a time to be happy and to spread that cheer around -- at the very least, an excuse to laugh. If you can't laugh and be happy when celebrating something as amazing as Christ's birth, then what's the point of celebrating anything?
Of course, there are those who do believe just that -- who would suck the life out of everything, and expect seriousness at every turn. Well, they're not doing us any favors; life's tough enough as it is. I say fight the fools with all the Christmas humor at your disposal -- songs, cards, games, movies, TV, you name it!
