Stories To Get Your Family Into The Christmas Spirit

Bring Some Classics To The Christmas Season

Christmas is a great time to start a seasonal book collection – especially if you have children. Nowadays parents just don’t read to their kids enough and children just don’t appreciate the classics like they used to. I can’t tell you how many children think Scrooge and the Grinch are just characters in a movie. Movie! Bah humbug! Those two were around before the VCR was even invented. This Christmas consider purchasing some holiday-themed books and spend some quality time reading with your kids.

Books Don’t Have To Be A “Christmas Only” Tradition

Seasonal book collections are a great way to enjoy books that are related to each holiday of the year and there’s no better time to begin this fun tradition than during the Christmas season. See what books you and your children have that are related to Christmas and group them together. Try to include at least five books, but including ten books would be even better. Some classic books you should include are The Gift of the Magi and Twas the Night Before Christmas. You could also include a treasury that contains several short stories, especially if you can’t find a short story such as The Gift of the Magi sold individually. If you don’t already have the books lying around, head out to the local bookstore to start your collection.

Store your books in an upright magazine storage container. Every year on December 1 you can bring out the books and enjoy them throughout the month. On December 31, you can put the books away to store until next December. Then bring out the books for the next holiday and repeat the process for each holiday during the year.

Brainstorm a list of possible ideas for your monthly book collections. February should contain books related to Valentine’s Day and President’s Day. March can contain a book on leprechauns, and May can contain a book on Memorial Day. Each month you bring out the selected books for that month. By only reading these books during their corresponding month you end up getting excited about reading and appreciate the books more.
