Popular Christmas Poems Help Us Celebrate the Season

Why Not Write Your Own Christmas Poems?

Christmas poems are a great way to commemorate the Christmas season. There are some classic Christmas poems that are well known and provide a great way to celebrate the holiday season. If you enjoy Christmas poems, why not make a few of your own?

A Time-Tested Favorite

One of the most well known Christmas poems is "Twas The Night Before Christmas." This poem was written in 1822 by Clement Clarke Moore. It is also known as "A Visit from St. Nicholas." This is just one of the many examples that prove Christmas poems are a wonderful part of the holiday tradition.

Get In on the Fun

You can easily incorporate Christmas poems into your annual holiday celebrations. Some families like to read aloud on Christmas Eve. This is a great tradition to start with your family if you don't already do so.

Don't Leave It Up To The Schools

Christmas poems used to be more widely incorporated into the public school system, but poetry is a lower priority in our educational system overshadowed by math and science. Also, concern about the separation of Church and State has also caused a decrease in religious celebrations in our schools. So, it will be up to parents to pass along any Christmas poems that they think enhance the Christmas season.

Let's Get Creative

You can help your children to develop their creative side by encouraging them to write Christmas poems of their own. One very easy way to start this process is to write the word "Christmas" vertically down the left side of a sheet of paper. They can write a word or phrase for each letter of the word Christmas. You can proudly display their Christmas poems on your refrigerator or wall throughout the Christmas season for your guests to enjoy reading.

If you have older children, they will probably not even need this creative prompt to come up with their own Christmas poems. It is probably the magic of the Christmas season that inspires people to write Christmas poems. There are also a variety of topics to address in Christmas poems including Santa, reindeer, Jesus' birth, and the Star of Bethlehem. Take some time to write some of your very own Christmas poems this year and document the magic of the Season in words.
