If you don’t water your tree properly, you run the risk of it drying out and becoming a potential fire hazard. Every December, there are over 400 fires in homes that are the result of Christmas trees, so you definitely want to be mindful of Christmas tree safety.
Make sure the Christmas tree lights that you are using are indoor lights. Before you hang your lights, make sure you replace any bulbs that are broken or burned out. You should never leave your Christmas tree lights on when you are sleeping or when you leave the house. A Christmas tree is a potential fire hazard, which is why you need to be especially cautious.
Artificial Trees Require Safety Measures Too
If you prefer artificial trees, don’t think you’re off the hook for Christmas tree safety. Before purchasing an artificial Christmas tree, make sure that the tree is fire resistant. Do not use hairspray or any other potentially flammable substances on your tree in an attempt to get the branches to hold a particular position. This is dangerous and is a fire hazard.
Watch the Ornaments
Be careful if you use ornaments that are breakable. They can pose a hazard to small children and even pets. Popcorn garland can pose a choking hazard to children because they might be tempted to eat it. The American Academy of Pediatrics actually doesn’t recommend popcorn for children under 4 years of age.
