The Painful Office Christmas Party

If you've ever worked in a white collar job, then you know that the erstwhile office Christmas party, while something endured every year, rarely if ever achieves its theoretical objective. In fact, if the OCP (as I will henceforth call it) were a service or product, the company would soon go out of business.

Whose Idea Was This "Celebrating Christmas in December" Thing?

One of these days I may have to move to Australia, because they go about celebrating Christmas -- only the world's most important holiday -- in the early summer. Well, summer Down Under anyway. Most of the Yule-celebrating world has their Christmas celebrations during cold weather.

The X-Mas Files

Back when I was in high school, I read a screed about how the term "X-mas" had cheapened Christmas, reducing the significance of what is, after all, the holiday representing the birthdate of the Messiah (even if it probably didn't really occur in December... but that's another rant).

Dealing With Christmas Crowds

Thank goodness for online shopping -- because those screeching Christmas crowds make me want to hole up in some dark, quiet place with a gallon of eggnog and a tub of Pumpkin Spice ice cream. Isn't it About Time We Updated Our Christmas Songs?

Some old Christmas songs are classics, in the same way the King James Version of the Bible is a classic: songs like "Silent Night," "O Holy Night," "Frosty the Snowman," even "Rudolph." But it's surprising how many outdated Christmas songs we sing just because our parents did, and theirs did before them.

Christmas in July: Has Mercantilism Gotten a Bit Out of Hand?

While I was craftily saving money in the local dollar store a few months ago, I ran into the phenomenon that I call Christmas in July. That's not an ironic overstatement. It was indeed July, and the place was selling Santa hats, fake greenery, and Christmas tree decorations in a big, jolly, just-installed display.

Christmas Rapping -- Yeah, Without the W This Time

About this time last year, I posted on the phenomenon of Christmas wrapping paper. In that article, I pointed out how (plebian though it is) Christmas wrapping tends to be way more interesting that its sound-alike, Christmas rapping. Without the W.

The Joys of Christmas Humor

From the Grinch to "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer," Christmas humor is firmly entrenched in our culture. Ironically, there are those who take a bah, humbug attitude to the whole idea, insisting that Christmas is a serious holiday intended for celebration of the Messiah, not for something as frivolous as fun.

People like that have a point... on top of their heads. C'mon now -- celebrations are about having fun, aren't they? And I can't imagine that the Reason for the Season would mind us enjoying the lives that have been given us, can you?
