Are You Making Any Of These Toy Gift Mistakes?

Finding a toy gift they'll remember the day after Christmas

Finding a toy gift isn't the problem for most families. It's finding a toy gift that doesn't get tossed aside in favor of a box that's the real issue. After years of seeing my children and then stepchildren do the same, here are some basic rules for toy buying.

Staying away from the trends

Toy gift marketing is directed at parents to get them to buy the newest and latest toys. Unfortunately, this doesn't always coincide with what your children actually want.

Fact: In North America, many children put up stockings during Christmas time. Dutch children, however, use shoes instead. They set out shoes in which to receive gifts at any time from mid-November to December fifth, the birthday of St. Nicholas.

Over the course of the year, your children will grow and their interests will change. And this doesn't make the job easy.

Trends in the toy gift market rely on basic themes: action for boys and dolls for girls. And if your kids are the same, then the cheaper versions of the trends will suffice.

The label doesn't matter

Although it might seem like a good idea to buy the toy gift that other parents are fighting over, the newness won't last.

Find toys that are tough enough to stand up to hours of play.

Toys without small parts or cheaper materials might be more expensive at first, but their quality will pay for itself over time.
These can include basic trucks and cars for boys or well-built dolls for girls. The point is that a toy gift needs to be something that they already enjoy, and not something that you hope they will.

Involving the whole family

A great way to buy a toy gift that will last through the winter is to find something that the whole family can enjoy.

You may want to find a puzzle or game that everyone can play again and again.

The toy gift that lights your child's eyes up on Christmas is even better when it brings a smile to their face throughout the year. So why not find a toy gift that they can learn from or share with their siblings?
