Okay, So Maybe It's Not Really Cranberry Sauce... But Who Cares?

Today, let's consider a classic Christmas treat: cranberry sauce. Delicious stuff, that, without which Christmas dinner would surely be incomplete. But some folks have this beef about cranberry sauce (or at least what we Americans call cranberry sauce), and I get sick 'n tired of hearing about it every year.

So let's just face it. We eat this sweet stuff made from cranberries every year, but not very many of us have ever eaten real cranberry sauce, now have we?

Christmas in July: Has Mercantilism Gotten a Bit Out of Hand?

While I was craftily saving money in the local dollar store a few months ago, I ran into the phenomenon that I call Christmas in July. That's not an ironic overstatement. It was indeed July, and the place was selling Santa hats, fake greenery, and Christmas tree decorations in a big, jolly, just-installed display.
